XolarSurf Offshore Norway: Saipem Reaches Key Milestone in Floating Solar Technology

The XolarSurf prototype floater, created in collaboration with the Norwegian manufacturer Kystteknikk and other subcontractors, was lifted and launched at sea at Kystteknikk's facilities in Dyrvik, on the island of Frøya, at the mouth of the Trondheim fjord in Norway. Design to withstand waves up to 8m, this represents the first full-scale test and a key milestone in the readiness of the product. The prototype is expected to remain at sea for about one year, during which its performance and production capacity will be monitored.

NASA JPL Developing Underwater Robots to Venture Deep Below Polar Ice

Called IceNode, the project envisions a fleet of autonomous robots that would help determine the melt rate of ice shelves. Harnessing their expertise in designing robots for space exploration, IceNode’s engineers are developing vehicles about 8 feet (2.4 meters) long and 10 inches (25 centimeters) in diameter, with three-legged “landing gear” that springs out from one end to attach the robot to the underside of the ice.

Smashing AUV Records: HUGIN Endurance Completes a Multi-week Fully Autonomous Mission

Kongsberg Discovery is excited to announce another successful milestone reached in the development of HUGIN Endurance following a record setting multi-week fully autonomous mission. After receiving a final navigation update from a pre-deployed transponder 10 hours into the dive, the 8-ton, 40 ft, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) operated completely independent of all human interaction and with no external navigation aiding for the duration of the sortie. This mission was conducted at depths ranging from 50m to 3400m and met the advertised 1,200 nautical mile range. Most impressive of all, was that HUGIN Endurance returned with a position error of approximately 0.02% of total distance traveled!
