NIWA and The Nippon Foundation are undertaking a mission to discover the undersea impacts of the recent Tongan volcanic eruption. In a rare opportunity to improve understanding of the nature and impact of a major volcanic eruption, NIWA scientists are sailing to Tonga to survey the ocean around the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai (HT–HH) volcano and surrounding regions. They will be surveying thousands of square kilometres of the seafloor and collecting video images of the eruption’s impact from NIWA’s research vessel, RV Tangaroa, and using SEA-KIT International’s Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) Maxlimer to conduct further mapping.

The World Ocean Observatory (W2O) and Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) announced today the launch of World Ocean Explorer DEEP SEA exhibit, creating a first-of-its kind immersive virtual aquarium showcasing deep-sea discoveries. Empire Offshore Wind, a joint venture between Equinor and bp, has awarded a contract to Maersk Supply Service for charter of its newbuild wind installation vessel (WIV). This vessel, together with US constructed barges and tugs built and operated by Kirby Offshore Wind, will be used for the installation of the project’s Vestas V236-15MW turbines.

NOAA NEFSC has tested iXblue’s SeapiX 3D volume sonar in the Block Island windfarm off the coast of Rhode Island, the first commercial offshore wind farm in the United States. The objective of the evaluation was to observe and monitor the pelagic ecosystem often overshadowed by the demersal and benthic communities in the windfarm areas.

The University of Plymouth and marine technology company Sonardyne have agreed a strategic partnership to drive innovation within the UK’s growing marine robotic and autonomous systems sector. The partnership will advance ocean data gathering technologies and platforms by leveraging the University’s academic resources and research facilities, Sonardyne’s leading acoustic and inertial navigation technologies, and the marine proving area Smart Sound Plymouth.

Oceanology International 2022 has now closed, and according to exhibitors and visitors was a resounding success, attracting a total attendance of more than 10,000 over the three days of the show. Four hundred and forty-seven exhibitors from 70 countries helped to make a huge step forward in connecting the global ocean technology community. Frequent inspections are needed to look for damage, growth, or misalignments. The best practice is to generate a real-time point cloud model of the inspected asset. The model lets inspectors make precise measurements and time-lapsed comparisons.
