Subsea7 today confirmed the award of a major contract amendment by Petrobras for the development of the Mero 4 field2 located approximately 200 kilometres off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at 2,200 metres water depth in the pre-salt Santos basin. The award was announced in redacted form on 27 September 20233 and was recorded in backlog in the third quarter of 2023.

Scientists examining underwater cliff ecosystems onboard research vessel Falkor (too) using the 4,500 meter robot, ROV SuBastian, have discovered two pristine coral reefs in the waters surrounding the Galápagos Islands. These newly identified cold-water reefs are situated at depths ranging from 370 to 420 meters. The discovery expands our understanding of deep reefs within the Galápagos Islands Marine Reserve.

IQUA robotics participated in REPMUS 2023 exercise, invited by the Spanish Navy to prove the capabilities of its vehicle SPARUS II AUV for the described mission. Deepwater services and intervention specialists, DeepTech, has expanded its fleet with three work class ROVs, bringing its total number to 26 vehicles. Greensea IQ celebrated the 25,000 square foot expansion of its Cordage Park production facility on October 17th. This new expansion establishes a manufacturing center for the production of several navigation and robotics systems including the Bayonet line of surf zone crawlers, EverClean hull cleaning robots, RNAV3 diver navigation systems, and OPENSEA Edge autonomy hardware.

RWE has appointed Fugro to complete a geophysical survey off the Danish west coast. Up to three survey vessels will be deployed to carry out a detailed pre-construction survey including a search for unexploded ordnance (UXO) up to approximately 34 kilometres off the coast of Thorsminde. Kraken Robotics Announces $3 Million Boulder Detection Survey Contract for Offshore Wind Farm Project in Europe. Kraken’s contract scope includes mobilisation of a dedicated survey vessel, deployment of optimal sub-bottom survey equipment, and expert personnel to provide specialist engineering design support to de-risk the installation of the project’s two large offshore substations. This survey campaign will be executed in Q4 2023 with Kraken’s Acoustic CorerTM technology providing accurate, high resolution 3D imaging of twenty-four sub-seabed cores, with the cores placed to maximise coverage over the foundation leg locations.

Divers can face difficult and dangerous conditions when performing essential underwater inspection, search and maintenance. Now a new Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) from Switzerland’s Tethys Robotics is providing a much safer alternative.

In a remarkable exploration beneath the surface, the Royal Norwegian Navy's HUGIN Team 1 discovered two new aircraft wrecks in Trondheimsfjorden. The well-preserved World War II wrecks were quickly identified as the legendary Blohm & Voss BV-222 Wiking V2 and the Heinkel HE-115 S4+DH. The wrecks lie at an impressive depth of 318 and 253 meters, respectively, and have never been visited by divers or submersibles before. The last few weeks a team at Blueye Robotics have conducted several dives with underwater drones in the fjord to capture the first close-up images of the seaplanes in around 80 years.
