More than one million tons of munitions dumped in the North and Baltic Seas during and after the two world wars posing a threat to both humans and the environment. So far, trained divers had to recover the ammunition. In the future, however, robots will take on this challenging and potentially dangerous task. The technologies required for this are being developed by the Robotics Innovation Center of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) headed by Prof. Dr. Frank Kirchner in the current CleanSeas project. Thanks to Artificial Intelligence, the robotic systems should be able to detect ordnance underwater and prepare its removal autonomously.

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has issued Approval in Principle (AIP) certificates to Saildrone, including the first AIP for a 33-foot (10-meter) commercial uncrewed surface vehicle (USV), the Saildrone Voyager. Approvals were issued to Saildrone for both the Voyager and (20 meter) Surveyor ocean data collection platforms. The AIP is an important step to class for Saildrone’s vehicles.

Saab receives order for Sabertooth

Saab has received an order for the autonomous underwater vehicle Sabertooth from the marine geophysical company PXGEO. The order value is SEK 620 million and deliveries will take place 2023-2025. The order includes more than 20 Sabertooth vehicles, which makes this the largest Sabertooth order to date. These will form part of PXGEO’s MantaRay solution for offshore seismic data acquisition and will be used for deployment and recovery of equipment during ocean bottom surveys.
