Offshore Innovators Celebrate 5-year Anniversary with Historic Subsea Robotics Training in Georgetown.

04.02.2022
Offshore Innovators (Guyana) Inc. (OIG), the first indigenous provider of specialized Subsea Personnel, is celebrating its 5-year anniversary of operations in Guyana. OIG commemorated the occasion by facilitating the first-ever Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Induction training to be held in Guyana, for eleven (11) local recruits, at the Pegasus Hotel this January.

The world-class training program was delivered in Guyana by U.S. based Drift Offshore Inc. in collaboration with Guyana based Caribbean Subsea Specialist Inc., to meet the stringent standards of the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA). Candidates were the beneficiaries of exposure to high quality technical tutoring and hands on Subsea Robotics experience with an Observation Class ROV operated in the pool on site.

Offshore Innovators subsea personnel development program for Guyana is modelled after the company’s successful local content development program implemented in Trinidad over the last decade. This program has stewarded subsea personnel career development from ROV Trainees to ROV Supervisors, Superintendents and Offshore Client Representatives for the major contractors and operators in the region.

This achievement represents a major milestone in the transfer of subsea technology to Guyana and paves the way for greater participation in technical roles by Guyanese. The program builds on the 2019 Induction Training of 5 Guyanese ROV Pilot /Technicians by Offshore Innovators. These 5 candidates have successfully supported the installation of their home nations first ever subsea field installation, making first oil possible at ExxonMobil’s Liza Destiny FPSO. They continue to operate ROVs locally on the Liza Unity and Payara developments, and internationally in Trinidad and the Gulf of Mexico.

Through the support of Team Trident USA, Offshore Innovators joint venture partner, the Guyanese personnel are afforded the opportunity to access on-the-job (OJT) training experience offshore. The OJT experience is enhanced by the Offshore Innovators mentorship program where the trainees were paired with Trinidadian Supervisors to help them navigate the competence development and assessment scheme.

Offshore Innovators Guyana recently refined its corporate structure to include 51% Guyanese ownership. The company chose to achieve this by investing in their people and allocated equity in the organization to the same group of engineers that pioneered the ROV industry in Guyana. This development makes the company majority Guyanese-owned and majority employee-owned. The operating staff of OIG is 100% Guyanese and are benefiting from business development coaching and mentorship from the parent company’s principles.

“We are proud of our 5-year legacy to date in Guyana. Our commitment to the development of talented local technicians and the transfer of technology process has already proven beneficial to the prime subsea contractors in the region. We have met the challenges of the pandemic, offshore personnel shortages, and local content legislation with pro-active solutions for our clients. We look forward to a historic year as we continue to leverage the competence of our existing Subsea Team in the development of their up-and-coming counterparts.” Dylan Galt, Managing Director, Offshore Innovators Ltd.
